Actress Lucy Liu has found trouble finding work as a leading actress in films and television shows. She was born and raised in Queens to a mother from Beijing and a father from Shanghai and that in itself may be what’s keeping her from leading roles.

Liu, 44, started her career in the early 1990s and has mostly found roles as a supporting actress. When she finds herself cast as part of a major plot line she’s usually a some sort of supernatural action hero or villain character who’s mastered the martial arts. Think “Charlie’s Angels,” and “Kill Bill.” Interestingly enough she’s typecasted even when she’s hired only for her voice: in her role as Viper in the animated film “Kung Fu Panda” she was a master at the “Snake style of Hung Ga Kung Fu” who tied up her enemies with ribbon. (Yes, she was a ribbon dancer too.)

Lui recently talked about race and being typecasted with the luxury online retailer Net-a-porter.com.

Here’s an excerpt from her interview with Net-a-porter:

“I wish people wouldn’t just see me as the Asian girl who beats everyone up, or the Asian girl with no emotion. People see Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock in a romantic comedy, but not me. You add race to it, and it became, ‘Well, she’s too Asian’, or, ‘She’s too American’. I kind of got pushed out of both categories. It’s a very strange place to be. You’re not Asian enough and then you’re not American enough, so it gets really frustrating.”

Liu’s wary of playing the racism card, but admits that she had to “push a lot just to get in the room”. “I can’t say that there is no racism - there’s definitely something there that’s not easy, which makes [an acting career] much more difficult.”

All “Best Actress in a leading role” Academy Award winners since 2002 have been white. In 2002, Halle Berry became the first African-American actress to win a Best Actress actress Oscars but since then all winners in the category have been white.

Great Britain is in the midst of a measles epidemic, one that public health officials say is the result of parents refusing to vaccinate their children after a safety scare that was later proved to be fraudulent.

More than 1,200 people have come down with measles so far this year, following nearly 2,000 cases in 2012. Many of the cases have been in Wales.

Childhood vaccination rates plummeted in Great Britain after a 1998 paper by Dr. Andrew Wakefield claimed that the vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella had caused autism in a dozen children. That study has since been proven fraudulent, but it fueled fears about vaccine safety in Great Britain and the United States.

“This is the legacy of the Wakefield scare,” Dr. David Elliman, spokesman for the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, told The Associated Press.

So, in the middle of everything today, we ran across a hellaciously distressed momma mallard and a bunch of her baby ducks that had fallen down a sewer grate. Another guy was already trying to fish them out, so my friend and I called animal control before we tried to fish the rest of them out. When Animal Control got there, we had all of them out and the mother duck quacking very happily. I was surprised - none of us got snapped at or hurt. I was even holding onto a bag at one point that had all of them in it and she just watched me.

I love how the duck is perched on the guy’s butt

What is a Pulsar?

It is predicted that supernovae triggered by stars that do not have enough mass for their cores to form black holes will result in neutron stars.

Neutron stars are small (about 20km across), rotate rapidly and are incredibly dense. They are mostly made of neutrons that formed as electrons combined with protons in the atomic nuclei of the dying stars’ collapsing cores. Their powerful magnetic fields lead to radio pulses that can be detected on the Earth each time they rotate. These objects are known as pulsars when the pulses can be detected on the Earth.¹

History

The British astronomer Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered pulsars while completing her PhD at Cambridge University in the late 1960s. Using a radio telescope designed by her adviser Anthony Hewish and Martin Ryle (both men later shared a Nobel prize for their work), Bell Burnell found strange radio pulses coming from a single point in the sky.

After a period of confusion about what was causing the pulses, Bell Burnell and her colleagues confirmed that pulsars, as the sources of pulses came to be known, are emitted by rapidly spinning neutron stars.²

I’m wondering where everyone was ten years ago when a President ordered Marines, soldiers, saliors and airmen to fight two wars.

People all sudden care about servicemembers when they stand next to the President. When they’re crouched behind a HESCO 90% of this fucking country forgets they’re there.

Do you really fucking think that Marine gives a fuck about holding an umbrella? Do you really think he feels disrespected by his Commander-In-Chief? Or do you think maybe he feels disrespected by the people who are using him as a prop in their partisan attacks?

I get so fucking angry at the people in this country who claim to care about those who serve. Because they only seem to do it when its convenient, when it makes them look or feel good.

If everyone who claimed to care actually cared this war would be over. If instead of spending news cycles on this kind of Mickey Mouse bullshit people put time and energy into enacting change my friends would be home. The VA wouldn’t have months of backlog. Less veterans would be unemployed and at risk of homelessness. Sexual Assault in the military would be given the attention it desperately needs. And maybe some real headway would be made on servicemember/veteran suicide.

Instead of any of those things happening though we get a week of this fucking garbage.

Scientists at the University of Missouri have devised a new way to create and control plasma that could transform American energy generation and storage.

Randy Curry, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Missouri’s College of Engineering, and his team developed a device that launches a ring of plasma at distances of up to two feet. Although the plasma reaches a temperature hotter than the surface of the sun, it doesn’t emit radiation and is completely safe in proximity to humans.

While most of us are familiar with three states of matter – liquid, gas and solid – there is also a fourth state known as plasma, which includes things such as fire and lightning. Life on Earth depends on the energy emitted by plasma produced during fusion reactions within the sun.

The secret to Curry’s success was developing a way to make plasma form its own self-magnetic field, which holds it together as it travels through the air.

“Launching plasma in open air is the ‘Holy Grail’ in the field of physics,” said Curry.
